Just recently, Oprah on her show featured Resveratrol. Together with Dr. Oz, they discussed how this natural compound could actually do a lot of wonders especially as an anti-aging compound. Resveratrol in itself is a natural plant antioxidant. It is mostly found in red grapes, red wine, peanuts, and berries. High concentration of this antioxidant can be found on red wine and grapes.
Research on the antioxidant has been done a few years back, but not until now, it is being promoted for many health purposes. Researchers found out through test tube and animal tests that this compound could actually trigger a longevity gene. Though it is not tested on humans yet, it is believed that the same gene is present in us as well. This means that when this gene is activated, it yields anti-aging results. It may slow down the process of aging.
Aside from that benefit, Resveratrol is also known to have the ability to fight cancer and prevent certain diseases, even Alzheimer’s disease. However, these facts are not well proven yet. That is the drawback when it comes to Resveratrol supplements. It is not even approved by the FDA yet as they say; that there are not enough facts to support its claim as a dietary supplement.
But then again, there are a lot of supplements that are now made with the said ingredient. Resveratrol supplements are freely marketed and have a number of claims. Though the promises are half-truth, one should be reminded that these products are not yet FDA approved. There may be risk involved with products as such. However, if you want the benefits of this antioxidant badly, the best and safest way to have it is to get it straight from the source. Eat a lot of berries: Acai, cranberries, strawberries, etc and grapes. Why, you should drink red wine too?
